There is always another boogey-man. We Americans NEED a nemesis to define ourselves against... otherwise we turn the war machine inward on ourselves.
And frankly IMO muslims just aren't up to the task. Sure they're scary and foreign and brown. They have machine guns and a flare for the dramatic. But they're just not a genuine threat at a existential level. They don't have the technology or resources.
But you know who does? Our ol buddy Vlad! Russia has nukes, resources, a long and dark history that would drive ANY nation to nihilism. Plus they were the bad guys in every single American movie between 1950 and 1990.
So once them eeeeebil scary goat-herders are defeated (well, really once we get bored with them), we'll come running back into the arms of Mother Russia.
