It is not possible to appreciate the dynamic within other people's families. And denial is a common defense mechanism.
Very true what you state, however, it is also a cope out within certain families, to be in complete denial, when all of the signs are there, and you still deny. That is not a solid defense mechanism, because these people can't realize the truth that is right in front of them.
I have known families just like this, who deny, when all the signs are right there, to see and to witness, and there defense is to brush it under the rug as it does not exist, when clear as night and day, the signs are all right there.
My shrink friend who we have talked about these sort of issues, state to me, so often families know the truth, but just can't give into the fact, that there lives will spiral out of control, and this they can't handle.
Some cannot bring themselves to admit, they have a family member who is mentally ill, violent, or evil.
It really is sad, because you cannot begin to heal, unless you admit to yourself, what it is that is wrong.
And now we have a woman in Vegas who tries to kill dozens of people with her car and nobody says anything. If she had used a gun, oh boy. This is an interesting case, although you shouldn't downplay the tragedy since someone died and some are badly hurt. She just goes nuts behind the wheel and then has no emotion when arrested. She has a 3 year old in the car with her and was apparently sleeping in the car for a week. She's from Oregon, so what brought her to Vegas? Some crazy dream she'd hit it big gambling and then lost her last penny? Maybe she wanted to be a prostitute. Where's the child's father and her family? Was she suicidal? Mentally challenged or unstable?
Like with any crazy, we have to know what meds she was on, who she associated with? Come on media, stop sucking.

Well you see, the gun fits into the AGENDA and we all know this by now
But you see where there is a will there is the way and the means. You do not need a gun to do your dirty work.
This is bad, what the hell made her snap were there signs here no one saw or wanted to see. Do you suddenly snap just like this, or are the signs there, and people once again, refuse to see them for what they are.
If this were a situation where she used a gun, it would be headline news 24/7 we know this.

Farooq and his friend Marquez, both born and raised in the US planned attacks in 2011/12 and put their plans on the back burner. It now looks like these two planned the San Bernardino attack. Both flew under the radar and were legal gun owners.
We are more likely to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and find ourselves victims of a madman not influenced by terrorism.
We are substantially more likely to die in a fatal car accident.
