The mayor of New Orleans, with the support of the majority of the City Council, appears ready to take down four monuments, including a towering statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. If approved, this would be one of the most sweeping gestures yet by an American city to sever ties with Confederate history.

I'm not sure I agree with removing all of these monuments. I think the suggestion of a compromise of turning Lee Circle into Generals Circle and adding a statue of Sherman, and making Jefferson Davis Parkway into Presidents Avenue and adding a statue of Abraham Lincoln, is a better idea. Instead of removing historical monuments, add context that gives a broader overall view of history.

Quote:
"Historic places, including the Confederate memorials in contention, can be catalysts for a necessary and worthwhile civic discussion," said Stephanie Meeks, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in a statement. "We believe we actually need more historic sites properly interpreted, to help us contextualize and come to terms with this difficult past."
New Orleans Poised To Remove Its Confederate Monuments

But I'm not sure many southerners would agree with a statue of Sherman or Lincoln next to their Confederate heroes.

I don't understand why a confederate state would remove its history.

I don't understand why this is newsworthy. Just because you remove a statue doesn't mean you've changed history. All you've done is appease a bunch of people who take offense at our nation's history.

New Orleans must still be in a Downward Spiral if they are willing to destroy their heritage and Historical past.
That's too bad.

I'm torn on this. On one hand it's a terrible mistake to think you can correct history by removing visual reminders of it. But on the other hand, most of these monuments were not erected until the 1930 and later in an effort to romanticize the Antebellum South and rewrite history about the Civil War.

If anything, I think we should keep these monuments in place but add new plaques telling the unvarnished truth about who these supposed heros of the South were.

Because liberal democrats are flooding into the South and or places are being got at by the new instant media age we live in.

Back in the day what happened in the South remained there and those who lived in considered it their business, an no one else's. However now that anyone or group can shame them to a worldwide audience via a click of a button....

New Orleans in particular is *VERY* dependent upon tourist money. It can ill afford to tick off large segments of the nation's or even world's population.

Let's erase history to make a handful of people feel better.

I guess you mean they are afraid of Black Lives Matter Riots unless they remove all traces of History of the Civil War. Should they also remove all traces of their French Occupation, Spanish Occupation and Mexican Occupation to satisfy any "tourist" that is against France, Spain or Mexico?

What about Southern Tourists (probably their biggest base) who will be offended at this totally ridiculous Political Correctness erasure of American History?

It's Nuts -

I agree, it's stupid to try to erase history. On the other hand, those Confederate "heroes" were actually traitors as defined by the U.S. Constitution. And those monuments should reflect that as well, since we're all about historical truth here.

I guess the Jefferson Memorial & the Washington Memorial in Washington D.C. are on the PC Chopping Block next. After all they were Slave Owners, and we can't have Memorials to these horrible people.
