We are under no obligation to trade, provide developmental aid, or otherwise engage with nations which do not share our values.

Enough is enough. It's bad enough we get in bed with Middle Eastern dictatorships and look the other way for oil. But hey, at least we get oil out of the deal.

When/if you want aid and development money, or trade support, earned by and because of our open society, either accept the strings that come with it, or don't take it.

So tired of Africa and its blaming everyone else for its problems.

U.S. Support of Gay Rights in Africa May Have Done More Harm Than Good
America’s money and public diplomacy have opened conversations and opportunities in societies where the subject was taboo just a few years ago. But they have also made gay men and lesbians more visible — and more vulnerable to harassment and violence, people on both sides of the gay rights issue contend. The American campaign has stirred misgivings among many African activists, who say they must rely on the West’s support despite often disagreeing with its strategies.

...
Fierce opposition has come from African governments and private organizations, which accuse the United States of cultural imperialism. Pressing gay rights on an unwilling continent, they say, is the latest attempt by Western nations to impose their values on Africa.

“In the same way that we don’t try to impose our culture on anyone, we also expect that people should respect our culture in return,” said Theresa Okafor, a Nigerian active in lobbying against gay rights.

...
“Before, these people were leading their lives quietly, and nobody was paying any attention to them,” Ms. Iwuagwu said. “Before, a lot of people didn’t even have a clue there were something called gay people. But now they know and now they are outraged. Now they hear that America is bringing all these foreign lifestyles. They are emboldened by the law. The genie has already left the bottle.”
Maybe the left should have followed their own advice and stayed out of the business of imposing their values on other countries.

Whoa! Woodrow Wilson, the staunch Progressive King, is where is is USA Law, to do this crap all over the world and sticking our noses in other nations business.

It is the law.
The law is to spread democracy all over the world, by force.

I'm OK with my nation passing no law to kill anyone without due process and a jury of their peers. I could careless what happens in another nation, unless they have screamed threats of harm toward my nation and people. Then you will be eliminated from the earth. I'm not watching my 6 constantly.

They will fight, if they don't like it.

I found one: Donald Rumsfeld. He said it democracy in Iraq was unrealistic. I do not remember anyone opposing free elections in Iraq since we were already there. Of course many people opposed the occupation since it did not have any actual benefits to the US, and was costing us a lot in blood and money, plus it was the best recruitment tool the enemy could hope for. The left did speak against killing gays in Africa, but the right wingers did too. It should not be surprising.

I doubt Africans did not know that there were homosexual people before. They put it as if the global human rights movement (gay rights is just one aspect of that) introduced homosexuality to Africa, which is certainly not the case. And when I think of other African ways such as genital mutilation, I think it would be odd to look the other way. In a globalized world it is kind of inevitable that the leading regions export their views to less advanced regions, deliberately or not. I don't even think it happens deliberately because there is nothing to gain from the way homosexuals are treated in Africa. In fact, many of those Americans that deliberately try to spread certain view in Africa are very right-wing radicals, missionaries, evangelicals, etc. They hold views very similar to those of traditional African values and also to Islam, which unfortunately has spread to some regions of sub-Saharan Africa and made people more radical. Homosexuality is a sin in Islam.

Don't get me wrong, I am not supporting homosexuality, I am happy I am not gay. But as long as I am left alone I don't care about its existence. I am not fond of the in-your-face gay movement, though, with its embarrassing parades etc. Since homosexuality can't be the goal or ideal, obviously there is no point in promoting it.

Those same countries treat women like cattle, won't allow any religion to be practiced but Islam, and stone women to death for being raped by a man who is not her husband. Lots of nations do lots of things we don't like, so do we bully them all into submitting to our values?

The US government trying to impose it's social values on other nations is not that same as some people who belong to a church trying to proselytize.

It's okay for Christian fundamentalists to take an interest in other countries affairs, didn't you know?
