When I was poor, I voted for Democrats until I realized their values didn't match mine and Republicans came closer.
Overwhelmingly white males and married white females vote Republican. Single white females vote Democrat. You can find this out by looking at demographic voting patters.

State or federal level? Until recently working class Whites still voted Democrat at the local level but Republican at the federal level since Reagan. Clinton temporarily reversed that trend but since Gore it's been the case again. You are now starting to see Republicans dominate that demographic at the local level. But as someone else said poor Americans in general are less likely to vote then middle and upper class people.
For the record both R and D have rich and poor voting blocks. Typically poor rural areas and affluent suburbs vote Republican. Affluent and poor urbanites typically vote Democrat.
If Republicans make good on their talk to cut welfare I'd be interested to see if it effects how poor Whites vote. To date the last cuts to welfare were under Clinton. Poor Whites being so critical in Red States seems to make common sense welfare reform undoable. My family is mostly from the poorest parts of Kentucky and many live off of SS disability and welfare, despite being physically able to work. They are devout Republican voters who often use Facebook to complain about other people abusing welfare LOL

I've hears the same argument over the years and my jaw still drops every time I hear or read such comments.
Does it matter whether they're in cities/urban areas vs rural/country/trailer parks?
The poor, all colors, usually vote for the person with the most promises of free stuff.
