The Federal Government won't do crap to Sheriff Joe. He is the only elected law enforcement, with authority by the people in the County. We are free or we are not.

I don't vote for him, I ALWAYS vote his opponent. As for throwing him out of office, the feds could do it that or throw him in jail for contempt of court like that Kim Davis in Kentucky over gay marriage.

As for your "we are free, or we are not" it's too complicated. Should we be allowed to carry AK-47s and rocket launchers because they are arms and be allowed to scream fire in a crowded room just because of the right to free speech?

Have you seen our welfare state lately? It may be more than 70 million.
They know how many people come in with visas, and that number is 70 million. You think 99.9% of them never return. Who told you this?

The 40 percent figure has been used by congress during discussions, and is the widely accepted estimate.

Pew puts it at 45%:

DHS has some estimates as well, along with specifics here:

Basically, while its impossible to provide a perfectly precise figure, its very possible to get a ballpark figure-which is the 40% range.

I think you are confusing yourself. I have not verified this number but it sounds about right from what I know. The reason we know or can verify this number is b/c we are talking about people who get visas. That is quantifiable. The government knows how many visas it hands out.

These other posters are pointing out that your 99.9% cannot possibly be accurate b/c an increase in 70 million people a year would be quite noticeable and would, as another pointed out, double our population in about 5 years. Our welfare state really has nothing to do with this discussion.

Again no one has exact figures because the federal government despite laws passed post 9/11/01 has failed to hold feet to fire. Governmental agencies along with private businesses simply have ignored laws and or directives for them to supply required information. The airlines in particular simply have refused to comply. This has been going on for > 15 years.

Best estimates put the number of visa overstays between 40%-50% give or take.

Actually, we know how many come in by airplane and we know - or should know - how many leave by the same route because airlines are required to gather passport details and report them to Homeland Security.

And we know this happens because foreigners are routinely denied boarding as happened to a family in the Uk not long ago.
