"Rather than making them or talking about putting up a fence, why don't we work out some recognition of our mutual problems, make it possible for them to come here legally with a work permit, and then while they're working and earning here, they pay taxes here,"

Times sure have changed.

That was then.

Median family incomes are down from 2007 and continuing to decline.

The poorest income earners are the ones hardest hit.

The presence of foreign workers hurts working Americans.

We have millions of unemployed Americans today and many of them lost their jobs to illegal aliens. It makes no sense today to allow more to come legally with work permits and to allow those already here to be able to remain here. If Americans got their jobs back they in turn would be paying taxes. I found it despicable that Obama gave the Dreamers and another 5 million illegal aliens with U.S. born kids work permits and a stay of deportation during his term as president.

Until the feds clamp down hard on businesses hiring illegals, no wall will keep them from coming over. They go where the jobs are, and obviously, the jobs aren't in their own country. Cut down on demand, and supply will go elsewhere.

Exactly this. Also net migration is now negative.

Yep, now we don't need a fence, don't need work permits, and don't need any functioning immigration laws at all.

And here i thought they were living in the shadows and we were not sure how many people were in the country illegally. Now we can apparently track all of them with ease.

LOL @ the right-wingers in here contorting themselves into impossible shapes to gloss over the fact that the father of the modern GOP had a soft spot for illegal immigration

Ronnie was just holding True To Coarse with the policies he supported when he was the Governor of California..
Both GW and GH Bush and Reagan and Nixon knew there were Trillions of dollars on the table. ALL They had to do was figure out ways to take it from America's middle class and blue collar workers.. THEY DID!
They started in southern states and against all odds moved north.. Yes Walmart is the largest single destroyer of Americas Economy. Never Before in our nations history has a National Employer paid such poor wages as Walmart does today.. They are succeeding to spin their own numbers today by hiring 20% of their workforce thru temp agencies.. The Orchestrated Recession of 2005 was exactly what Big Businesses paid for... 10's of Millions of Americans out of work and now competing for poor paying part time jobs with NO Benefits and against a Huge Group of people who on average make LESS than $2 an hr in their homeland.. Talk About The PERFECT Storm..

Bush: "...but today if those people [illegals] are here, I would reluctantly say that they should get what society is giving to their neighbors." Then he continues to obscure the issue of legal vs illegal by talking about his own family.

Then listen to Ronnie gloss over the entire illegality of it and talk like he just wants to give all of them work visas and have them "come on over" "rather than talking about a wall."

Look, I dislike the illegal alien problem as much as almost any conservative. But let's not pretend that the problem didn't start with Ronnie wanting them here because they were "good for business." The love of greed by American business who buy political clout is why so many are here today.

There is a direct line from these 2 guys pro business anti-worker mentality to Walmart workers on welfare and food stamps.

It should be bvious to anyone watching this the difference in rhetoric from today vs the 80s. These guys seem to be unabashedly obscuring the legal vs illegal to further their own agenda.
