You could say the same thing regarding African American slaves embracing the religion of their masters, Christianity. That makes just as little sense.
Religion is not logical, religion is about gut feeling and belief. I'm not invalidating either faith, just saying that it's pointless to try and rationalize religious decisions like other decisions. It's not the same. People have a right to believe whatever they want, for whatever reason they conjure up.
