I realize we don't have a lot of options and buy a lot of China's junk. It might even be a good auto at a cheep price.
I still won't buy one. My little personal part of go to h*** to companies that want to destroy the American way of life.
I would love to see them fail just as they would love to see Americans without jobs.
I think you are a little late to draw the line on Chinese cars as most of what we buy is Chinese made, i'm also sure much of todays car content is of Chinese manufacture. China basically has owned the American consumer ever since said consumer sold his American manufacturing industry down the crapper to get his toaster for $2 cheaper.
Chinese cars? people will buy them or the wont we'll have to see what their product is all about. At one point in my life i said i'd never buy a Japanese car now thats all i'll buy.
Over the past 30 years I have driven Ford trucks. My non-scheduled maintenance has consisted of one battery cable. Not counting wiper blades, oil changes, tire replacement and other scheduled/routine maintenance my trucks have a combined 4 hours in the shop to get one battery cable replaced. I don't know about GM products because I don't buy or drive them.
People who refuse to buy American made products have no reason to complain when THEIR job goes overseas.
Engines are made in Canada. Final assembly is in the US though.
How do you feel about Mexico for your Ford, GM, VAG, FCA, BMW, Honda, Mercedes Benz, Mazda, Nissan or Toyota?
Mexico doesn't have China's manufacturing reputation. It's a little different with IPhones as everybody keeps alluding to. My IPhone's malfunction won't kill me and other people.
Have you ever seen a crash test for a Chinese car? Volvo/Geely is doing what GM is doing as well.

I was just going off your quote; "I don't want one that isn't assembled or majority sourced in the USA. I'll accept Canadian, or if I'm going foreign Europe or Japan, but not elsewhere"
Volvo is a bit different, since they're actually owned by the Chinese now, yet still manufactured in Sweden. I'd drive the new XC90 without hesitation.
I have always bought American and European cars until recently. I traded in an 11 year old Tahoe, which gave me no trouble in the 11 years I owned it, on a Japanese SUV (Infiniti QX80). I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, but having owned it for almost 2 years, I still don't see it. Not that I dislike it, in fact, I like it a lot, but no more than I liked my Tahoe.
The only problem car I have owned was a British made car. The American and German cars have all been great.
I don't think I would buy a car from China. At least not until they have a track record on cars, which could take many years. The quality of products, in general, from China has a track record of being very poor. Apple has managed to keep quality control in check, but they are an anomaly rather than the rule.
In 2000 I bought a Dodge Dakota( it was truck of the year in 2000) but shortly after that I went to work for a company that provided my transportation. So the Dakota set most of the time . I put 6,000 miles on it in 12 years. I retired three years ago and now that is what I drive. I might buy another car but I'm not sure and in no hurry to do that. I'll still keep the Dokota.
After the bailouts, subsidies, tax breaks, future tax breaks, etc... GM even "paid back" some of their money with...oher government handouts. All told, GM got $100,000,000,000.00 from the government.
And now they will start the process of building cars in China that will be sold here.
1. chinese products are crap- if anyone has ever been foolish enough to risk thier lives with machinery made in China, I think they will understand.
2. chinese componants are crap- Chinese steel is more akin to iron than actual steel
3. Many Americans look to see where a car was made
4. As a consistent GM buyer, I will never buy another GM car now. Ford makes come great trucks/cars made in America. Honda, Toyota, BMW and Subaru make cars in America, so there are many "American made" choices.
I count on my pickup truck (now my daily driver- I like them better than cars) not to kill me when I drive to work.
If GM built a plant to manufacture cars in China that were only going to be sold in China, I wouldn't have as much an issue with it. We have too much stuff imported from China. If I buy an article of clothing, say, made in Honduras or Sri Lanka it doesn't bother me as much because those countries are not a threat to us. They are not building artificial islands in order to infringe on the maritime rights of their neighbors.
Agree. This is also one of the reasons that what Trump is saying makes sense. We used to have tariffs on incoming goods to level the field for our own companies and when that went away, so did the jobs.
I, too, hate buying the stuff made in China and try very hard not to buy it. Reading reviews, you can tell what was made in China, it is hit and miss. One comes out of the box working for 2 months, the other didn't work at all and yet another one is still working 2 years later.
I remember what the US was like when people had decent jobs, fast food and retail was worked mostly by students and Americans had pride in what they produced and their country.
Sadly, China is being destroyed by the same pollution that we were trying to stop and now we can see the result of pollution gone amok.
I don't have a problem with gm or any other manufacturer building cars outside of the US. I do have a problem with GM in that it shouldn't have been bailed out and therefor shouldn't exist.
