Just to help out our posters, here is some basic information in the article.

The fate of $600-$1,200 rebate checks for more than 100 million Americans is in limbo after Senate Republicans blocked a bid by Democrats to add $44 billion in help for the elderly, disabled veterans, the unemployed and businesses to the House-passed economic aid package.

GOP senators banded together Wednesday to thwart the $205 billion plan, leaving Democrats with a difficult choice either to quickly accept a House bill they have said is inadequate or risk being blamed for delaying a measure designed as a swift shot in the arm for the lagging economy.

Ahhh, well, this is what Senator Obama has to look forward to in trying to change Washington.

It just won't change. The Republicans will band together to block anything he wants to pass because that is what they do. (Not just them, the Dems have done it too.) One party obstructs the other because that is what their job is!

I'm sorry, but that's just incorrect, though I agree with your sentiment that Obama will get nothing done in Washington.

You say "The Republicans will band together to block anything he wants to pass". Who is "he"?

Just for some clarification, here's what the Republicans want:

To clean up the language that the Dems made so vague in order to ensure NONE of these rebates go to illegals;

To add senior citizens, their widows, and the disabled.

Here's my source: AP story on FoxNews.com

Of course, though, the Republicans are blocking this just because they can.

UB50 we at last agree on something. Partisan politics is what is really wrong with DC. Its not that Republicans are all bad or all Dems are liberal. Its that no one is willing to compromise for the good of the nation.

And if the roles were reversed, the Dems would do the same thing.

I am continually amazed at the naivete displayed on this board on a regular basis.

If you think about it clearly...

Republicans: Trying to give YOU back some money WITHOUT taking your money and spending it on other things... you get MORE positive cashflow

Democrats: Trying to give YOU back some money AND take some of your money and spending it on other things... you get LESS positive cashflow

The republicans are trying to fiscally responsible (albeit the handout isn't exactly fiscally responsible)... the democrats only want to spend.. tax...and spend... over and over...

The bill, with the exception of the illegal aliens getting checks, was fine as it was and was supposed to be rushed out. It's the democratics that have jumped on it like a bunch of greedy gophers trying to add more and more crap to the bill. Why don't they just let the thing go rather than try to one up it? That's what drives me nuts about the Democrats.

Pelosi urged the Dems in the Senate to pass it as it was, and Bush was a part of the discussion to create the bill as well. The republicans would have passed it as designed and as Pelosi urged the Senate to do. The Senate added spending to it as they always do, and it was blocked.
