Barry Coates dead; veteran was face of the VA scandal - CNN.com

I sincerely hope that whoever wins the Presidential election makes Veterans health care and overall reform one of their top priorities. This is really tragic

"Coates testified he was dying of cancer because the procedure was delayed at several VA facilities, including the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina.

Leaving some lawmakers in tears and making national news again, Coates described in detail how he waited months, even begging for an appointment to have a colonoscopy. But he found himself on a growing list of veterans also waiting for appointments and procedures.

About a year after first complaining to his doctors of pain, Coates said, he was able to get a colonoscopy. Doctors discovered a cancerous tumor the size of a baseball. By then he had Stage 4 cancer, and it was only a matter of time before he was overtaken by the illness, he told lawmakers."

May he RIP.

May the people responsible for his lack of care rot.

Sad and unfortunate story.

The new secretary seems to be taking action, .7% fired seems to be small but by government standards that is significant. It's not just about firing, it's about holding people responsible, long overdue.

"The Veterans Affairs Department has fired 400 more employees this year so far than in 2014, according to Secretary Bob McDonald.
McDonald said VA has fired 1,500 employees this calendar year compared to 1,100 people last year – a 36 percent increase. The former head of Procter and Gamble added that 2,280 employees have been terminated since his confirmation as VA secretary in July, and that the department has proposed disciplinary action against 300 workers for “manipulating scheduling.”
The VA has a workforce of roughly 330,000 employees. VA fired 2,247 employees for disciplinary or performance reasons in fiscal 2013, more than any other Cabinet-level agency, according to data from the Office of Personnel Management. That amounted to about 0.7 percent of its workforce."

Sad. Our veterans deserve better. It's disturbing how they are allowed to fall through the cracks like this.

What is really tragic is that you don't understand the problem.

The VA system does not need an overhaul. What the VA system needs is to address certain specific VAMCs in regions of the US were there are more veterans than services that can be provided.

Certain VAMC administrators need to have their performance reviewed and appropriate action taken.

Note that Coates could have had the procedure done privately at any local hospital.

check that arrogant and condescending tone at the door

your suggestion sucks. telling people to go outside of their network for care is an unacceptable solution. you should know better, or maybe you don't. so you're nasty because you have nothing else to contribute.

Well, I guess that's a little more compassionate than the conservative line of "don't get sick".

If you're putting individuals in positions who are not concerned about the veterans, then veterans are going to continue to receive the lower level care that they've always been receiving.

The current VA, meanwhile, has done far less than it could to "clean house" as promised to do. While the 2014 law makes it easier for the discipline and termination of some 500 positions connected to the wait times scandal, far fewer have faced punishment.

The bureaucracy is totally resistant to change.

Justice Dept. declines to prosecute VA fraudsters |Washington Examiner - 12/29/15 2 more Federal Workers who went before a Congressional Committee and pled the 5th.

A pair of Department of Veterans Affairs officials who defrauded the VA for $400,000 will not face any criminal charges, despite an inspector general's request that they both face a criminal investigation.

The VA declined to fire Rubrens and Graves in November. Although the agency planned instead to demote the embattled officials, a paperwork mistake spared the two from even that minimal punishment.

Thing are not really getting any better - Corruption still thrives and why shouldn't it when these Criminals KNOW that the Corrupt US Department of Justice & US Attorney General will refuse to prosecute them. They don't even get a slap on the wrist. There are not really any "firings" (except for whistleblowers), there are some "resignations" (with full retirement bennies of course) and it can take YEARS to get these Self Centered Criminals out of the Federal Job Force. The VA is much like our other Government Agencies and Education at all levels ..... it's nothing more that a Massive Jobs Program to benefit Federal Employees.

Top VA Benefits Official Steps Down Two Years After Legislators Call For Resignation |Daily Caller - 10/19/15

They are UNION protected and DOJ protected ...... the Veterans have zero protection (or consideration) at all. The same is true for the rest of us. The Federal Government is operated by Careerists and run like the Mafia.

There was no criminal act, unfortunately their procedures and policy stink, no rational organization would allow this to happen.
