What a freaking waste of money. You can take online courses at Stanford and MIT if you want. Plus Coursera and other online learning courses. Why are we spending $4B?

And they drop this gem...

Last year, there were more than 600,000 high-paying tech jobs across the United States that were unfilled,
So the companies get to outsource their jobs, make their profits, and now we, the taxpayers, are left with a $4B bill.

Of course, they manage to create yet another sob victim story too...

In addition to course access challenge, media portrayals, classroom curriculum materials, unconscious bias and widely-held stereotypes exacerbate the problem and discourage many of our students from taking these courses.
What about laziness?

i'm torn. it's good to teach kids computer science basics, and that's going to cost money, since today's k-12 teachers don't know anything about it.

but the idea that there is a 'stem shortage' is a bunch of bull.

How many K-12 students are taking Stanford or MIT online classes?

Those are just examples. There are all levels of courses available and open source software to learn from.

Obama uses these flimsy excuses like Solyndra being a "good investment" to launder and give tribute to supporters who give it right back as politcal donations in appreciation.

I'm sure instead of seeing a physician, you look up your symptoms on online and treat yourself for free, right?

The fact is that computer science has become a primary science like biology, chemistry and physics. Today's students (and many adults) spend their entire day ensconced in digital media and need to understand how its built. There will be more jobs in computer science than any other field of STEM.

Today's teachers are woefully unprepared to teach computer science. Most states don't have have a computer science specialization for high school teachers.

Progress happens and the education system needs to upgrade to handle it.

I'm sure if this was Ted Cruz's initiative you'd love it... But why waste an opportunity to bash the president, right?

If it was a much smaller amount of money, I wouldn't have a problem with it. $4B - are you serious? Do you even care at all what your government is up to? You would get fired at a job if you spent a huge amount of money on something without considering more cost-effective options. This just symbolizes the problem with this administration - they think they've got a blank check.

It ends up in the same places Stimulus went. They need to balance something in their books.
