"Although participation will be open to all students, those who identify as black or mixed-race [colored?] will be prioritized in selection. Twelve students have already expressed interest in the program."
I hate to say it, but back when there were white and black schools, the blacks did get a better education than today, and it is not some white guy, telling the black parents how to raise their kid.
I can see where this is going. They give the dorm a name, it becomes a national organization much like fraternities where membership is prized. Then companies will step over each other to hire them.
I'd like for some college to propose a "white prioritized" dorm and see how THAT goes over.
I don't agree with the idea of a self-segregated Black dorm-- but I have to be honest with you. In Storrs, CT there is no shortage of white folks... A "white prioritized" dorm would be redundant.
“We know it’s not issue of whether African-American males have the capability to excel in school; rather, it is their environment that sometimes inhibits their potential,” said Stephanie Reitz, spokeswoman for the university. “At many predominantly white institutions nationwide, elements of African-American culture are harder to find, which can make some students experience a sense of detachment from their universities.”
Did anyone ever think to point out the obvious fact that the problem lies in black male culture?
I would simply ask, what solution would you propose instead of the one mentioned in the article ?
Every student should be allowed to choose their dorm with no preference for skin color. Universities should be color blind (Kinda like MLK's dream).
