What do you think??

We have roughly the same size in terms of GDP.

But smaller population.

GDP per capita is better.

Vast land, natural resources, cheaper and better housing, stable borders, lower taxes...etc.

Of course things are going downhill recently but so is in EU.

But let's not forget in the last century they've been through two world wars.

Honestly, I think it an oft-asked question and one that is completely inane.

It's like asking who is better, the Beatles or the Stones.

The EU and the US are part of the West.

Ask if the EU or the US is better than Saudi Arabia or North Korea.

The operative words are "better off." Better off, in what way?

Seems to me most Europeans have lost interest in immigrating to the US unless required to do so by their employers.

Most of Europe faces similar challenges as it relates to economic bubble/ bust cycles, technology substitution and offshoring of jobs as we do.

For high achievers, no question, USA is the best place to be. EU has a stronger safety net, so folks looking for social welfare are better off there, and the EU is a much better place for Muslim migrants.

I think the fact that the UK is trying to claw back powers from Brussels and they are having a vote next year to pull out of the EU all together speaks volumes about it.

GDP per capita is higher in the US than places like Germany mostly because all Germans get 6 weeks paid vacation plus lots of paid holidays to boot. And less overtime work. People simply work alot less. They simply want to live as well as work.

The bottom half of the population in the EU is better off, and has a higher quality of life and standard of living than the bottom half in the United States. It is easier to make a good life for yourself in Europe -- contrary to popular belief, there is greater wealth and income mobility there than the US.

The United States economy is less regulated, and more economically productive and efficient -- just at the expense of the well-being of the vast majority of its people. It's a better place to take risks and get rich, and from an economic perspective it is a better place to be rich.

I think they both have some great qualities, and some areas that need improvement. But they're both doing quite well. To ask which is better is somewhat irrelevant.

I'd rank things this way:
  1. Top performing EU countries
  2. United States
  3. Other EU countries
