Funny thing is, military protocol is to fire upon an "unfriendly" rather than let them board you.
That means they HAD TO HAVE received a "Stand Down" order from someone pretty high up, and it had to come amazingly fast.

Interesting that some are so outraged over a picture of a sailor crying but seemingly have no problem when we send our troops off to die in meaningless, wasteful, unnecessary wars of choice that have no benefit to the US. A seriously out of order set of priorities IMO.
And, people are actually buying the story that USN boats in the age of GPS and who knows what other electronic aids to navigation get lost?
It's enough to make you cry, as are the Afghanistan pictures from that time period. Iran of the 70's was much less repressed than America of the 70's. This travesty belongs to Carter. But, it needs to serve as a warning, the uptight, old fashioned members of a society are as just as capable of revolting as the free love, anything goes crowd. The social hands of time can be pushed back.
