Here in Illinois it will be Tammy Duckworth running ads against Mark Kirk if he publicly states he refuses to fulfill his Constitutional duties as a senator. And with the GOP having to defend 24 seats, many in swing states, there is as much if not more peril for Republican senators if they choose to obstruct the process rather than fulfill their obligations. Here in blue Illinois, with a very popular opponent in Duckworth, it's a big risk for Kirk.
I wish I could rep you because you hit it on the head.
The majority of voters aren't the entrenched Obamahaters as the OP is. They don't see following the process that has been followed for 200 years in a calm and non-controversial manner, as cause to vote against a Senator.
Doesn't matter perhaps. You've seen this before, maybe.
Step 1: On November 8, 2016, elect a Democratic majority in the Senate (not crazy since there's a 24-10 differential in seats up for election)
Step 2: On January 3, 2017, the new Senate members get sworn in.
Step 3: On January 4, 2017, the Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, deploys the nuclear option for SCOTUS nominations, Ted Cruz has to put away his copy of Green Eggs and Ham and cry in the corner in a fetal position.
Step 4: On January 4, 2017, President Obama nominates a Eric Holder (haha) to the vacancy left by Scalia. Senate holds hearings.
Step 5: On January 19, 2017, the Senate confirms Eric Holder and he is appointed as a SCOTUS Justice.
Step 6: On January 20, 2017, President Obama leaves office.
What happens to republican senators that vote for an Obama supreme nomination?
Perhaps what has happened in the past will help in guessing what will happen in the future? When Supreme Court Justice Kagan was confirmed, five Republican U.S. Senators voted for her. They were: Richard Lugar, Judd Gregg, Lindsey Graham, Susan Collins, and Olympia Snowe.
When Supreme Court Justice Kagan was confirmed, nine Republican U.S. Senators voted for her. They were: George Voinovich, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Judd Gregg, Richard Lugar, Kit Bond, Mel Martinez, Lindsey Graham, and Lamar Alexander.
I know that three of these Senators continue to serve in the Senate today; not sure about the rest (still there, or moved on to something else, or defeated in primary/general election, or whatever), and not sufficiently interested in doing the research to find out.
President Obama will nominate a qualified individual. And then, let the (Republican) games begin.

He obviously does NOT know what THE CONSTITUTIONAL DUTIES encompass.
Mitch already stated his intentions before Scalia's body made it too the morgue. The {R} Senate Campaign Committee will solicit donors to defeat that evil Obama and deny him the appointment to save America. Partisan {R}s will eat it up like a Philly steak sandwich and big money is raised. Mitch in secret makes threats to Senate members he will take away their share if they dare vote for Obama"s appointment. Obama sends up two for consideration the lock step {R}s deny both.
The elections take place, {R}s had their palms greased, they hold onto to the Senate barely. You heard it here first.

We will elect Senator Sanders as president and back him up with a Democratic majority in the Senate. In the meantime the Senate will find enough Republicans to support President Obama's nominee to SCOTUS that an moderate Judge will be approved. After Sanders is elected and the Senate has a Democratic majority several of the elderly Judges will retire and a truly Liberal court of younger judges will result. That will protect the country from the pernicious attempts by the Republicans to try to return this country to a time that never was and never should have been.
Put down the pipe. If what your proposing came to fruition, the middle class would shrivel up even smaller than it is now and we would all be employed at Walmart.
