I'm just pushing back on this popular notion that until fairly recently, immigrants (particularly from Europe) came here and started assimilating and speaking perfect English within 24 hours.
That's bunk. They fought harder than hell to hold desperately to their old country customs and languages. Sometimes their children were no better. It wasn't until their grandchildren or great grandchildren that these families had fully assimilated progeny.
I can easily make a case that Hispanics have done far better at assimilating at an earlier stage of their immigration into this country.
Sorry I meant to quote desertdetroiter. By old culture I meant late 19th century - early 20th century. American culture changed many times. It wasn't stagnant from the colonial days until the late 19th century lol. Not that I'm claiming you said that. Just saying.
Do you have a source for foreign language pamphlets? I've never heard of that.
I asked a woman last night about her son's middle school music lessons. Her obviously heavy Asian Chinese accent kept me from understanding anything she said except "sixty three dollars". I deal with Indian folks a lot of my day that cannot correctly pronounce my name even though it is a popular first name.
Every day is like living in a third world country now. They are all coming here.
You can thank Governor Brown for that. The number of illegals getting drivers licenses in CA now outnumbers legals getting licenses in CA. That's the world we live in. Welcome to the Golden State.
they are also doing that in New Jersey....which has become the 2nd Calif.
