No they are not independent countries, only the UK is. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not sovereign nations. The border between England and Wales or England and Scotland is NOT an international border. But the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland is an international border.
The prime minister is the prime minister of UK, there is no such thing as prime minister of England. If Scotland was a separate nation they would not need an independence.
The United Kingdom (UK) comprises four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.[1][2]
Within the United Kingdom, a unitary sovereign state, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have gained a degree of autonomy through the process of devolution.
The UK is a sovereign state, but there are four COUNTRIES. Scotland is a country, not a state or a province or anything like that.

Plus they have their own international football teams.
They have a very close relationship, but they are still separate countries. It's as if we joined Mexico and Canada and became the North American Union. We would still be a country, not a state of the North American Union.
Only IF we all used the same currency. Very important.
"I LOVE LOVE LOVE democracy and freedom!!!! (except when the proles vote a certain way and I don't get the outcome that I wanted!!!!!)"
Not the point.
For a country to significantly alter its broad national course beyond simple elections, IMO there should be more checks and balances.
The same should have applied when the UK entered in with the EU. I don't know the history.
As an American citizen I have an opinion, but no vote. What I 'wanted' is not material, since my 'wants' are mostly based on my personal investments. And that may conflict with what may be best for the UK.

Even if we all used the same currency, we'd still be separate countries. Just like the EU where most countries use the Euro, they are all separate countries. They have separate governments. Same currency has nothing to do with it.
British banks have lost 1/5 of their stock value as of now. Good one Brits....geez.
Incredible.
And, the architects of this fiasco are (of course) now walking back their promises and rhetoric.
Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
"Amid the turmoil, the right-wing leaders of the movement for a British exit from the E.U., or Brexit, have quickly begun to retract the promises they made to their supporters. Brexit advocates previously insisted leaving the E.U. would allow the country to better fund social services, strengthen the economy and control immigration. Now, they claim their promises were misunderstood, or were not even promises at all."

Not in calling a country a 'country', but huge implications whether or not they are using the same currency.
