The movie, "Spotlight," which won the best picture award, brought my attention to the extent of this abuse. I am guessing the numbers we know of, are just the tip of the iceberg! My question is: why were these priest not reported to the law and charged???

The Vatican knew of thousands of priest that sexually abused children. Instead of reporting them to the law authorities, this is how the Vatican handled it!

2,572 priests sentenced to a lifetime of penance
Another 848 over the last decade had been defrocked, according to Tomasi. The others were sentenced to penance and other mild religious sentences.

I am not Catholic, or religious. My point is that IMO, no one, not even you, has any idea as to the extent of this problem. I suspect the Catholic church is still sweeping this under the rug. http://www.snapnetwork.org/snap_stat...use_crisis.htm

IMO, the entire organization (catholic church) should be shut down in America for being a pedophilia ring.

Many are in jail. The problem is that many of the abused did not report the crime or reported it only to the church. They neglected to report it to the appropriate authorities: the police. The church is not a law enforcement organization; it is a forgiveness organization. When you go to penance to confess a crime, the church has no authority or responsibility to charge you or report you. This is similar to attorney-client privilege or doctor-patient confidentiality. Obviously, the church is going to try and cover it up, just like non-denominational churches have done, and like the Boy Scouts have done, and like schools have done, and like police have done, etc.

If you are the victim of a crime, report it to the police, not to the organiztion your perpetrator was a member of.

I believe the movie revealed why?

The Church had a real good thing going with their attorneys....they get the victims parents to sign stating they would never talk about it again, and they send the priests away, giving the family $20,000.00.

It was a shocking movie, wasn't it? Bringing out all kinds of emotions....especially anger...

what bothers me more is, that people still, patronize the church...how utterly insane....

The same reason cops, judges, and DA's get away with breaking the law and hurting people- the people that can do something about it choose not to.
