This is something I'm struggling with--if you are a free-thinking person, you are bound to have ideas that fall outside the realm of the current leftist orthodoxy. When do you speak your mind, and when do you keep your mouth shut? Is there a point in debating them?
How should the decision to speak up be affected by the recipient of the speech--aka what is our social responsibility upon encountering a group of people spouting ignorance versus an individual? Is it valid to stay quiet for fear of being called a racist, sexist nazi? Lately I've seen examples of people being abused verbally, socially, financially--even physically--for exercising their First Amendment right. In this day and age of groupthink and free spaces and micro aggressions, should we speak up more or less? At what point is speech no longer free?
we should always speak up. freedom isnt free, and if the lefties cant understand that, and if they want to try to control your right to free speech, and they commit a crime in doing so, then have then arrested, and sue them civilly. once they realize that you are not going to kowtow to their demands that you think like they do, they will leave you alone.
Always speak your mind - respectfully, calmly, intelligently. Arguing doesn't work. Discrediting false believes one-by-one is the only way to change people. If they are already hyped up, the first thing you have to do is calm them down or else they will not listen. If you can't calm them down, move on.
At the union hall many years ago I had an hour long conversation with a Communist party member about our respective ideologies. Communism versus libertarianism. Two years later I saw her picture in the paper. She was running for office as a Libertarian

So how is defending your "rightist orthodoxy" free-thinking? When pondering free speech, how does one determine the legitimacy of rival view points. Defend yourself to the point of your personal tolerance.
When is it worth it? When you don't have bills to pay and kids to feed, I suppose. I guess that would mean when you're young and single, but that demographic tends to agree with the leftists anyway.
Ask them why they think it's ok to steal your money.
