Couldn't rep you more.

Once they clean Michelle's decorating junk out of the White House, nobody will be talking about Obama anymore.

(Oh and before Obama apologist labels me with pointless label of "conservative", I voted for Obame in '08. Lesson learned on that)

Lol...you're so sad.

I really don't care if he skips Nancy Reagan's funeral except the idea behind it and all the excuses that presidents don't normally attend funerals of first ladies really bugs me. It's an old world attitude that is a little sickening in this day and age. They served their country even if they were not elected to the office. There will necessarily be lots of security and media coverage, so that excuse that a president won't attend so people can mourn in privacy doesn't apply. It just seems like poor taste in my opinion.

I get what you're saying. You're not questioning President Obama but you're questioning why all presidents don't attend FL funerals.

I really do not think this is sexist--more like protocol. First Ladies are not elected to office--they happen to be married to the men who have been (which is the sexist part--the USA is one of the few countries that has never had a female leader).

He's going to Austin to speak about the future of technology--probably a subject more important to him than the unsurprising natural death of a 94-year-old former first lady.

But, in all honesty, I would not care if he was going to rock out, either.

I wish I could be surprised at the faux outrage on this forum, but I'm not.

It's so pathetic and predictable, I can barely put it into words.

Agreed.

Some of the people here are so nutty. I just can't even.

A fairly made argument in a thread like this? I raise my coffee in salute.

As I see it, the sexist component is more rooted in other factors - the fact that the idea of a female president has been so far-fetched for decades, and of course the fact that powerful men tend to marry younger women, who in turn outlive them. In other words, there will at any point in time tend to be more living former first ladies than former presidents. I would expect the tradition to continue if the spouse is of either gender.

Fairly or unfairly, I am certain that it's easier to move around the schedule for a presidential spouse of either gender than it is for a president. The security apparatus is bit more relaxed, and (s)he's not at all involved with the necessity of maintaining command and communications at all time. Death never comes conveniently.

On a purely personal level, I think it's actually rather suitable. First ladies (spouses) share a set of experiences unlike any other. That they are the ones to be there for each other, even in death, seems very fitting to me.

I wonder how many feigning such outrage over this ever took the time to write Nancy Reagan a note, send her a card, send her flowers, or something similar to show their alleged appreciation of and concern for her while she was alive? Because no matter how much they may whine about Obama, Nancy's just not gonna know WHO's at her funeral.

Much ado about nothing, the death of Nancy Reagan is a media event and little more, we tend to make more of our celebs than they deserve. Those who denigrate Hollywood as the lair of liberal politics fail to make the connection between the likes of Nancy and Ron and the fact of their Hollywood beginnings, both having a fair amount of dubious behavior in their past, but that can be put aside easily enough in our star struck country. She was not the most intellectual first lady, she wasn't the most political, nor the most loved, but she was pure Hollywood as was Ron. I think the day has come when we aren't as impressed with media celeb creations, the old studio types are long gone and we have the pile of hypocrites we call celebrity as a monument to a past culture some loved and some hated.
