Well stated by both Lindsey Graham and Elizabeth Warren. Looks like the president is close to a nomination so we will see if they are crazy enough to continue down this path.

Quote:
"We are setting a precedent here today, Republicans are, that in the last year at least of a lame duck eight-year term -- I would say it’s going to be a four-year term -- that you’re not going to fill a vacancy of the Supreme Court based on what we’re doing here today," Graham said in an unusual session of the Judiciary Committee, where members debated not bills or judicial nominees, but Obama's right to carry out his constitutional powers in an election year.
"We're headed to changing the rules, probably in a permanent fashion," he said
Republican Admits Supreme Court Blockade Is Unprecedented

Quote:
“All I can say is, that’s what constitutes extremism in the United States Senate,” she argued. “That’s what has nursed what’s going on now in the presidential primaries.”
Warren called out Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), pointing out that, if the current president were a Republican and not Barack Obama, there would be “a greater accomodation” for nominees submitted by that administration.
“Can you be any more naked about what’s going on?” Warren asked. “There is no point of principle here for those guys. This is naked politics.”

The GOP and the Constitution do not mix well.

The Pubs may very well be putting themselves in a situation where they lose, no matter what, by their obstructionism.

Advise, consent and appoint.

The President can nominate the second coming of Solomon and Constitutionally the Senate doesn't have to do anything.

Smell that, it's power. Power of the Legislative; kind of musky but make no mistake, very real

Mark Kirk will definitely lose his seat in the Senate over this. Duckworth will beat him over the head with it every day.

I don't even know why the GOP is talking about this. Hold your cards close to the vest, let the process progress, and let nature take its course. If candidates aren't worthy, shut them down. All of the talk ahead of time is just stupid.

I agree the GOP is making itself look like a bunch of buffoons. The country is really in need of a conservative president right now and the petty squabbles, the ridiculous stance to stop anything Obama suggests and stupid antics at debates are really making them look like a bunch of stuffed shirt fools.

Exactly. The GOP has created a situation where Obama is going to nominate someone that they previously approved with no objections for a lower court position. Had they not said a word he would have likely chosen someone they could substantially vote against. Now they have no cover for the naked obstructionism and pettiness.

Pat Toomey is also likely to lose his seat over this as well. 52% of PA voters said they would likely vote against him if he blocked the SC nomination.

I have to agree with this. The Republicans were incredibly stupid for jumping up immediately after Scalia's death to inform the country that they would not even consider anyone the president--who had nearly a full year left in his term at that point--nominated to the SC, and would instead allow there to be a vacancy on the highest court in the land for over a year purely for political reasons.

It was so unnecessary, as it was always within their power to decline to affirm any nominee the president sent them through the process the Constitution sets forth without making themselves look like political tools. But it seems the Republicans simply can't help themselves when it comes to making themselves look stupid.

Now they have painted themselves into a corner and have no graceful way out. If they follow their Constitutional obligations and consider a nominee their rank and file will see it as capitulation. And if they don't, everyone else will see it as the political grandstanding and obstruction that it is.

Republicans are their own worst enemies.
