Get real. This is not a harsh punishment to deter crime, this is another manufactured crisis by NK to use as leverage in trying to get sanctions eased.

Any American who goes to that country voluntarily is an idiot.

You must not have traveled to many third world countries. They do indeed have harsh laws and punishments such as this.

It never fails to amaze me how many Americans insist on going into countries the US Dept of State has said not to and warned that they could provide little to no assistance if they run into trouble. Of course, if they do get into trouble they want to be bailed out.

How idiotic do you have to be to take a poster off a wall in a totalitarian country where looking at Dear Leader wrong earns you death by mortar? The kid tearfully said he made the worst mistake of his life. He did.

Default North Korea Sentences U.S. Student Otto Warmbier to 15 Years’ Hard Labor

I just can't work up any sympathy for bone-headed Americans who insist on making themselves political pawns by going to places like N Korea, Iran or ISIS controlled territory.

I have no sympathy for anyone that goes to a third-world country such as this. You don't even have to do anything wrong, they can lock you up for any reason at all. They get what they deserve for going in the first place.

Their country. Their laws. Their courts. Understanding that is what it means to be a citizen of the world.
