Right there, this is the correct answer. Government's role is to not be everyone's mommy, ensuring they never have to deal with any hardship and kiss their boo-boos. Federal government's role is to ensure the safety of its citizens and ensure the free market system remains free. That is all.
Nevertheless, most Republicans are quite bitterly opposed to legalization of marijuana. Many of them are still opposed even if the law only allowed if for medical purposes.
ummmm......I wouldn't call it lack of empathy but lack of wanting others to continuously pay for other peoples problems when those other people do not want to do for themselves but expect the government to pay for it.

So I'm supposed to pay high taxes while you pay no or very little taxes, and I'm supposed to have empathy,
I'm supposed to pay sky high insurance premiums while you get a subsidy,
I'm supposed to work to pay my bills while you get subsidies
and on and on....
How about showing appreciation instead of being greedy and expecting more?
No, I lost my empathy when you are given all kinds of help and don't have the decency to appreciate the help you do get and try to help yourself to work instead of my money.
Thats they key. Conservatives want to be successful and choose to help people. Democrats want to force you by taking tax dollars so they can feel good without actually doing anything.
If you vote for politicians to take what belongs to one person by force and give to another, that's theft. It isn't you directly stealing, or even doing it with any conscious malicious intent, but that doesn't charge the nature of it.
But you do realize that sometimes politicians ask voters to vote on hiking sales taxes upon themselves, and they actually vote to do it.
Repubs and Demoncrats view empathy differently....Repubs view empathy as developing a system where people can work and move into a middle class lifestyle....Dem empathy is getting and many people on welfare that are dependent on their handouts so they have power over the dumb poor.

Republicans do that in order to produce jobs and that leads to votes. Republicans don't want to do anything about millions of jobs going to Mexico, China and other countries.
Despite espousing "christian values", why do most republicans lack empathy for others? Bill Maher covers this so well. Gay rights, health care, etc - a republican will only support them after they are personally affected by them.
You should ask the same question of Liberal Democrats. They defend Thugs, Think Violence is a form of expression, along with burning, looting, and destroying public property, Hate the Police, are against the Constitution, and hate anyone who doesn't agree, until something happens to them. Then they flip flop. .

Of course its his fault. If a Company fails the CEO goes. Obama started with the right words, then flipped over in favor of the people who think all Americans should support them
