Bush orders clampdown on flights to US | World news | The Guardian

Quote:
The demand to put armed air marshals on to the flights is part of a travel clampdown by the Bush administration that officials in Brussels described as "blackmail" and "troublesome", and could see west Europeans and Britons required to have US visas if their governments balk at Washington's requirements.
I understand wanting to protect the country from terrorists, but the regulations are going to decrease travel to the US. Right now, we're getting a lot of Europeans coming over to take advantage of the weak dollar. This is a terrible idea to tick off Europe.

Gonna have to agree. I don't see planes being used again as a means to attack us.

I'm not saying these lunatics will never incorporate planes into there plans again, I'm just saying I don't think passengers are gonna sit back and let someone take over a plane like they did on 9/11.

I like having the Air Marshall's on planes, and would like to see at least one on every single flight.

I didn't get into the fine details, but from what I read, we want some ID on prospective travelers...a little background...a little bit more scrutiny than we've been asking for. I'd have to hear a LOT more before this sounds ANYTHING like "isolationism". Sounds like a little precaution in a time when Europe is rapidly on the way to becoming a part of Islam--and a part without the severe restrictions of the "real" Islam. Before we allow entry from THESE folks, I need to ask a few questions---a VERY few. Hardly much of a "clampdown"; it sounds more like just an annoying inconvenience to me. Haven't we asked the same type thing of our OWN passengers, on DOMESTIC flights? If you are hesitant to board a flight because of the presence of Air Marshals, what does that say about YOU? Just exactly what is it about these guys which makes you feel so uneasy, that you'll refuse to fly?

I take what I read with a grain of salt. I remember the stories I've read about controlling the costs of welfare benefits as a "willingness to starve babies", and a police-involved shooting in LA as evidence of "Genocide against young black men"...and the Minute Men as a "hate group". Could it be that this "isolationism" is similar?. Has anyone actually taken the time to look up the definition of "isolationism"?...(OR genocide, OR starvation, or 'Hate'?).....

I agree with your standpoint... but people don't generally do that... either they are too scared, too selfish to risk their own life, or don't take the issue as seriously as it actually is. I would certainly attempt to kill a hi-jacker just because I would think myself dead anyway if I didn't.

There were air marshalls prior to 9/11, just not as high in number. I like the idea of pilots being able to be armed as well.

From the article it sounds to me like more than just a few questions. It's possible that people from England and The EU would be required to have visas issued by the US before they can travel. The 9/11 hijackers were mostly here on student visas. How did that make us safer?
