They have been offshoring jobs for like, 30 years now. My dad worked in the automotive industry all his life. From the 80's on, it was all about China, Mexico, etc. I watched him and his friends jump from job to job because all of the good paying opportunities we being destroyed. He made it to retirement, but many of his friends had to leave the automotive industry and do other things for much less money. Lots of African Americans ended up poor and on welfare due to all the offshoring and shuffling of jobs and opportunities. It devastated the communities around where I grew up, and yes, I hated offshoring at the time. But, I was told that this was for the benefit of America, and I just did not understand. Call me silly, but I still don't understand what the benefit was.
Today, there aren't that many Americans who want to work in manufacturing. There are also tons of jobs that go unfilled because either the pay is too low, or Americans just don't want to work in manufacturing anymore. Lots of immigrants come here to do those jobs, and they don't complain. I don't think we need to be reshoring jobs just so we can give a bunch of immigrants some work to do.
The time to act was long, long ago. Now Americans have moved on. McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, these are now the jobs of the future. Should have thought of that before they sent all the jobs overseas I guess.
andy, have you ever heard of a guy named ross perot?
i voted for him. twice.
Yes. I frequently quote his bit about that giant sucking sound. I witnessed it first hand. It made me very angry and bitter to see what was being done to my country, and my fellow Americans. I was 5 years old when Ross Perot told us what would happen.
Having grown up around all this, I am not at all surprised to see so many now leaning towards socialism/communism.

he was ridiculed endlessly for that quote at the time. twenty-some years later he looks mighty prescient.

I had to change your number to reflect the time frame.
Before China and Mexico it was Venezuela, Japan, Hong Kong, Colombia, Malaysia, India, Egypt, and Spain, among other countries. The ones I listed are just the ones which the company I worked for off-shored to.
Offshoring can be reversed at anytime. It hasn't been because the 1% fund the political parties.
The Dems adapted to the destruction of the middle class by representing one faction of oligarchs and creating the Leech class for votes. The Repubs represent the top 10% and use the born-agains and overtaxed for votes.
This is why both parties are hysterical about Trump.

I wouldn't say "all of a sudden"-people have been warning about it for decades.
I'm not exactly a fan of Winston Churchill but I love some of his quotes especially:
"You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else."
This is also the first time in American history that the majority of people believe that their children will be worse off than the previous generation. People are getting desperate...and angry.

You can add Brazil in the late '60s-early '70s RCA was manufacturing vacuum tube components in Harrison NJ, shipping them to Brazil for assembly, then returning the completed tubes to the US for distribution.
