Could this drive a wedge between Russia and Iran? Azerbaijan is close to Iran and has cultural and religious ties to it. It's Shia and was part of the Persian empire.

They are largely Shia but are highly secularized.
This has been an on going conflict since the collapse of the Soviet Union. If there's a Russian angle here it would be a proxy fight between them and Turkey since Turkey is closely aligned with Azerbaijan. Ironically, Russia is in a security pact with Armenia but is the primary arms dealer to the Azaris.
I couldn't care less what religion if any either country follows, I'll take the side of 'ain't none of our damn business'.

As an aside, we have a couple of really good Azerbaijani and Armenian restaurants in town. This thread made me hungry.
