Why have so many American's started distrusting thier government?
Growing up in these United States, Wyoming specifically, which is a pretty conservative state, as I recall everyone was proud to be American, Proud and respectful of our government; I don't recall hearing many people ranting about how much they distrusted the government, the way I do now.
What happened? What brought on this change? These days it seems like large numbers of American citizens do not trust our government and the numbers of people who feel that way seem to be growing more and more each year.
I do remember that I began to distrust our government in the 60's when they tried to draft me into the war in Viet Nam. I managed to avoid that, but since then I don't recall having many reasons to to distrust it or think that that it was out to get me or harm me in some way. But I recognize that many other people are very distrusting and that numerous conspiracy theories have sprung up. I'm curious to hear what other people have to say on what caused this change to come about.

Because of the information age, people are more aware of the world and are exposed to different viewpoints. This is for the better, because it is never wise to have blind trust in anybody or anything.

We have everybody except congress making laws and they are not supposed to. Texas is taking the executive actions of the president to give benefits we cannot afford to illegals to court. He keeps overstepping the bounds of his office but nothing is done about it. We had a supreme court justice die with no autopsy.
I just heard one of our soldiers stating that we have cut the military too far and our safety as a country may be at jeopardy.
More people have voted in the primary for Trump but instead of getting behind him and helping those of us who want law and order back; the republican party is going against him and then will blame him if he doesn't get elected when it will clearly be their fault.
On the other side we have a socialist running but it isn't a fair race because of super delegates.
We send money to other countries and support people in the USA who have never done anything for anybody but all you hear is that the people on Social Security that they and their employers paid into are the problem.
Why do I not trust the government? It is a corrupt bunch of people that need to start being more concerned about doing their jobs than they are in keeping pleasing the fat cat companies who are robbing all of us blind. Real loyal Americans are being sold to the highest bidder by our government and one of those people that is using us to make money will probably be our next president. That's why I don't trust our government for the first time in my 70 years.
we can tel the truth from the lies now that there is more information in the open with WWW-
I think it actually started with our Founding fathers.
The did NOT trust the existing governments where their parents came from so they set up a NEW Constitution which LIMITED the power of the federal government.
They gave MOST of the power to the individual states.
Read the true purpose of the Bill of Rights and WHY they wanted them.
Note it is about "inalienable rights endowed by our creator, NOT the government "giving" us rights.

This is close to what I was going to say. The country was FOUNDED on distrust for government.
That's why the U.S. used to be considered "exceptional"...it was the only place on earth that had the mentality of letting people be as free as possible, which led to great success, whereas everyone else around the world had the mentality that safety (or the feeling of it) was more important than Liberty, and that they were "given" rights by their leaders.
That's why it's frustrating for me when I hear people say "we're the laughing stock of the world...we're so backwards...all the other countries have this and that provided for them.."
Then move to those countries! Why did people need to change the one place on earth that valued freedom over security?
Because they are blatantly in the pockets of corporations and campaign donors.
The lobbyists push THEIR agenda instead of ours.
The good of the common person is no longer the driving force or the deciding factor. In fact it is seldom considered at all anymore.
the problem is not the lobbyists!
the problem is the poor choices voters make installing legislators to represent them!
Only legislators can pass laws!
If you have laws that favor big business, send a thnak you note to your favorite legislator and reconsider the criteria you use to elect the next lawyer legislator to represent your interests.
