I know we have Obama-care and not at all very likely to ever happen, but hypothetically speaking, if every U.S politician decided they wanted a healthcare system just like in the U.K or other European countries practically identical for every U.S citizen what would it take, and how much would our politicians have to sacrifice to get it?

Well firstly, they would have to sacrifice their own platinum service healthcare plan they have for merely sitting in the house; then they'd likely have to sacrifice all the lobbyist money that comes their way from the insurance companies, big pharma and medical suppliers to keep the status quo in play.

Boy; you're talking major sacrifice on the part of legislators so kiss that idea good bye. There's still billions of profit to be made off you folks before you all hit the bankrupt wall.

It would take a more unified populace on the matter.

In other countries, both the ideological left and right perceive universal healthcare as something worthwhile. There are conflicting perspectives on how it should be managed and improved – but few, if any, would argue against its existence altogether.

Meanwhile, Americans are still in bitter disagreement over whether such a system should ever surface at all.

Nailed it.

It would take changing the belief that healthcare is all about making and maximizing profits to believing it's all about taking care of people. Lotsa luck with that.

What would it take? MASSIVE TAX HIKES. No thanks.

Plus, we have already seen how good (tongue in cheek) Uncle Sam is with handling health care with the disastrous O Care and the V.A.

"they would have to sacrifice their own platinum service healthcare plan"

I hate to burst your "hate Congress" bubble but, they do NOT have a "platinum" plan.

In fact, I doubt you know much ABOUT their plan.

You do not hear the truth in this area. Large taxes would be needed. Corporate profits would rise as they would not have to pay for their employees coverage. The individual would not see the cost on their earnings as it would just be another part of their federal taxes. This would be bad overall as right now too many do not know where their federal tax dollars go and what those dollars pay for.

Most employees as well as many on this forum complain about costs but do not understand the share their employers pay into their coverage.

Universal coverage is good idea but the population will need to understand what they will gain.

I like the idea of Medicare for all, but most think that means its free when it truly is not.

First we'd have to destroy the economy, divide the nation into warring factions and dismantle the armed forces....we are well on our way to fullfill socialist version of the the Karl Ichan refrain as applied to political ideology, 'obliterate, not rebuild'.

Not gonna happen; wouldn't be prudent.

Oprah will never have a health plan "practically identical" to other people's.
