The Q13 Fox report’s claim that the minimum wage was the only thing that killed this business ignores a whole bunch of relevant questions. Why are other pizza restaurants in in the immediate area thriving? Did they talk to any other local business owners? In the end, it’s impossible to point to one closing franchise restaurant as a symptom of a deeper problem.
The hard truth is that a core demand of business ownership is adjusting to the vagaries of the market. Every business owner has to deal with fluctuating expenses, many of which aren’t announced nearly a full year before they go into effect like the minimum wage was. Something between 60 and 80 percent of all restaurants close within five years of opening. Would Z Pizza thrive if they didn’t have to raise the minimum wage? It’s possible, I guess. Would they make more money if we dropped the minimum wage to the federal minimum of $7.25 or the tipped employee minimum of $2.13? Of course. But we need to make sure that our lowest-earning workers can afford to live in the city they work in, and the minimum wage is the best way we have to do that.
As to Shah Burnham’s claims that she’s “terrified” her employees will have a hard time finding work, she can rest easy: Working Washington yesterday published a list of 14 Seattle-area pizza places that posted job openings to Craigslist last week alone. Z Pizza’s employees, if they want to stay in the same field, will likely be able to find work fairly easily. In fact, they’ll soon be paid even better in their new jobs.
Who needs nuanced thought, when folks here on CD can just feel happy about someone losing a job?
You've got to love it when liberals learn economics the hard way. It doesn't matter how many times you explain reality to them. They simply refuse to accept it.
She needed a better location, or a better pizza. The sucky ones operating on a shoestring will weed themselves out, and new ones will rise to close the gap. Sounds like everything is working according to plan.

Coming from people who don't even believe in markets and capitalism that's extremely rich.
Rents are determined by a lot of factors, the cost of utilities go up, the owner raises rent, an area gets more attractive, the owner raises rent, the owner thinks he can milk more money for no reason, the owner raises rents.
All of these things are out of control for the business, they have to pay that rent if they wish to stay in that location. The building owner is like the government to the store owner.
Sorry I don't feel bad for failing businesses that cannot afford to pay the bare minimum. I would rather support businesses that are successful rather than play the stupid game that all businesses should be winners because they exist.
I guess I do support socialism, I think it is important for the government to regulate businesses so they don't do things like unsafe working conditions or dumping toxic waste into our drinking water.
Why would the government lower wages? Businesses are already trying to do that every time some idiot says businesses should be allowed to pay people as little as possible so their failing business can keep trucking along.
Most businesses enter into a MULTI-YEAR LEASE to control their rent costs.
If it wasn't so sad it would almost be funny how the left will learn the hard way what $ 15.00 minimum wages will cost them daily.
It all sounds so nice to get $ 15.00 per hour but than comes the time you have to go grocery shopping and need things that are now so expensive and no job to pay for the items.
I wonder how many more homeless people there will be added?
The dirty little secret is that the only entity that profits from higher wages is the government that will collect more in income taxes.

Except that isn't how the free market works. The free market doesn't force property owners to pay a certain wage. Idiotic laws like this push the mom and pop stores out. Large chains stores can handle the increased costs easier.
I bet not for long working two jobs is not good not good for health for relationships for mental sanity. If a bunch of low wage workers got two jobs there would be less jobs available not all of them would be able to find work and what about the unemployed they could not find a job either.
