It was a Prince song that Tipper heard that started her crusade, but seriously, that is only because her daughter happened to like Prince. It could have been ANY band who's lyrics she didn't like. If her daughter was into metal, it would have been a metal band that started it. And as you said, metal bands received the lion's share of her wrath, not Prince.

Actually, Tipper Gore's purchase of Prince's Purple Rain was the catalyst for the whole PMRC and Warning Labels thing.

The PMRC compiled a list of 15 songs it deemed objectionable. Topping the list was Prince's "Darling Nikki," for its reference to masturbation. The story goes that Tipper Gore bought Purple Rain (the album containing "Darling Nikki") for her young daughter, who promptly pointed out the naughty bits.
