Maybe you can't stop it but you can make it very uncomfortable for them. I never silently stand by while some hater is actively hating in my presence. To do so is tacit agreement with the hate.

The cashier was bad-mouthing gay people, loudly and continuously. It's inappropriate for the cashier to subject the customers, or the rest of us for that matter, to her bigoted opinions.

And if she gets to stand there spouting off about her personal beliefs, anyone in the vicinity is equally free to share their own opinion on whatever she's announcing. Once again, we see conservatives whining about free speech, with no grasp at all of the fact that freedom of expression works both ways.
Well, ok, I'll play. I am not defending the cashier, but many gay women want to rub your nose in their gay-ness, so are easily identifiable.
And if they were in your own living room, you would have the right to discuss it with them by any terms you desired.
