Rome fell to itself... there was not an empire that could take on Rome... same can be said of America... it won't be outsiders that take down America... it will be Americans themselves... When Rome tried to appease everybody, nobody was happy... When America tries to appease everybody, they make it worse... Eventually, I honestly think America will be broken up into various countries when the fighting ends... just like the Romans...

The madness of MAD actually works. This is a tremendous frustration to the investors that own the Military Industrial Complex. Without a complete involvement in a world wide intensive conflict their profits are limited to building the limited equipment needed for side shows like Vietnam, Iraq and Grenada. They have realized this and encourage these wars as their limited profits are still worth more to them than the horrendous death and destruction even these limited wars can create.

This seems unduly dismissive of the Chinese. They aren't a sure thing, but there is at least a decent chance that they will become the world's leading economic and military power in this century.

For once, Mr. WestCobb, we are in agreement.

Mature, industrialized nations, especially of they have some resemblance of a parliamentary democracy, have little incentive to settle their differences on a battlefield. But I don't see much chance of being nickel-and-dimed to death in a series of "brushfire" wars, either. Great Britain fell from prominence due to the outdated concept that "trade follows the flag", and the high expense of maintaining a large military to support a colonial empire.

What dismays me most is the apparent reluctance of all tested democracies to find a way to identify, and unite against a common threat.

You beat me too it.

We are fighting our peers in a war right now. Amongst our own peers right here in our own country. A kind of '"cold civil war".

And it's by design. We've been divided amongst ourselves, mostly by the current administration, along every line imaginable.......race, religion, citizen status, healthcare, cops vs. the citizens, left vs. right. capitalism vs. socialism, sexual orientation, and on and on and on. They are making up stuff by which to divide even more.......the whole identity thing, i.e. white people insisting they are black, males are female, hell even a cat was voted dog of the year last year.

Every line has been blurred to the point where we are at war with ourselves. Total insanity now ensues.

If that ever happens. When it is all over there wont be much left on the planet.

And if the fighting continues, each side will have been reduced to throwing rocks at each other.

They won't become a superpower (which means global and having the ability to project power anywhere) but they are a great power. I do think they will crowd out the US in East Asia and eventually get their East Asian hegemony but they won't make any inroads elsewhere. China is close to 70% of the population of East Asia so becoming the hegemon isn't an unreasonable goal. Maintaining that East Asian hegemony in the future will require them to put all of their resources into it which will mean that China will be unable to effectively project power elsewhere. That's all they want though really.

Link please

I would respectfully disagree. The Chinese are real good at duplicity. They'll tell you one thing, while doing another right in front of you. But they seem so nice doing it, you just want to believe they are the fuzzy little bunny that wouldn't do you any harm.

The Chinese have a very long history, and memory. They remember well the western colonization, and the opium wars, and the other exploitation they suffered at the hands of westerners. These are episodes in their history that ended not even as long as a century ago.

The Chinese are NOT your friends.......My information comes from one on one discussions with non Chinese Asians. There's always more behind the scenes, than the media provides. Everybody is inferior in their view, and will be treated as such when they have consolidated their hold.

As far as inroads, they have been using US dollars to buy up hard assets all over the globe. Lots of investment in Africa, South America, and they pretty much own and operate the Panama canal now. To say nothing of future Canadian oil production, rights to timber harvest, etc, etc, etc.

They have already done so in Africa.
