It's clear liberal's and conservative's have completely different visions for America. So it's no surprise one side is unhappy when the other side gains ground for their agenda.

In one word or phrase, and without judging the other side, how would you describe two groups with opposite political agendas each trying to impose their political, social and economic visions on one country?

I would describe it as misleading. There is not one liberal view and one conservative view that are diametrically opposed. Rather there is a spectrum of beliefs and most people are not at the extreme ends of it. But attention is heaped on the extremes by the people who benefit from division, and too many people lap it up rather than think for themselves.

I disagree that the USA can be divided into two simplistic groups and labeled with terms that most can't define.

Its far more complicated than that.

Though I do agree it's easy to draw a line in the sand and point to everyone disagree with as "them". It takes a lot more work to be willing to understand why they differ and work to find common ground.

Here's a tip. If you call yourself a "conservative" or "liberal", then you are doing it wrong.

I think I get what you’re saying here WaldoKitty, it’s like the old joke, ‘there are 2 kinds of people in the world, one kind thinks the world may be divided into 2 groups …â€.

Although, if the framework of the question includes this definition for conservative (from Critical Thinking: What It Is & Why It Counts:

Quote:
…For example, people with something to lose tend toward conservative choices politically as well as economically. Nothing wrong with that necessarily. Just an observation about the influence of Loss Aversion heuristic on actual decision making. We are more apt to endure the status quo, even as it slowly deteriorates, than we are to call for “radical†change. Regrettably, however, when the call for change comes, it often requires a far greater upheaval to make the necessary transformations, or, on occasion, the situation has deteriorated beyond the point of no return. In those situations we find ourselves wondering why we waited so long before doing something. …
If there were no problems, there would be no need for change.

However ...

Just thought of another word besides irrational. Inertia.

If that's true and it might be, that's very positive.

the two parties divide us- we rally behind a party - not really one idea- because ideas are many and can be changed.

Its really just a spectrum of how much people want the government taxing, regulating, and enforcing state programs, so I always thought Orwell's description of authoritarian vs libertarian was accurate.

Really, politics is all about dividing people. Everyone has different ideas of how to solve problems, but everyone is in the mindset that we must pick ONE master plan that everyone will be forced to participate in. Instead of letting people be free to organize as they wish, people are pitted against each other fighting over whose plan will be forced on the rest.

Democrats want the government to have the power; Republicans want the people to have the power.
