They were getting us ready for this, "lack of being competitive in the world", by the kids getting a participation award, instead of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons for their achievement above the rest, in public schools.
We are only as exceptional, as our government will let us be.

You do understand, exceptionalism ended with the Progressive Era and the onslaught of micro managing a free market, by government regulation and taxing. That alone has stifled the economy and the personal drive to be the best(competition).
When government gets involved only the rich can afford the regulations and taxes(Standard Oil) Government regulation and taxes, create monopolies. Then government allows them to exist, if they benefit government(revenue) If they throw the finger at government, they get broken up(Standard Oil)
