Sure, but nobody is worried about FTM transgender people - they're only worried about MTF transgender people.

The only league that would be affected would be the WNBA, and since nobody watches it, maybe allowing transgender people would help increase the league's popularity!

Sure why not. If that transgendered person can do the job and not have any special circumstances set up for them I say let them play.

Call me a bitter clinger but I think if a woman or transgendered person can handle the physical requirements and not have the bar lowered for them to get them in than why not allow them into the elite branches of the military and pro sports.

So if a transgender can go to the bathroom/locker/etc. it pleases, then will they be able to join professional sports designated to any specific gender? If so, then people who identify as male or female should also have the right to participate in the male/female sport of their choosing, otherwise that would be descriminatory, right?

Now, what about, if a transgender is in the military (or PE in school), where men/women have different physical requirements, such as pushups, etc... so how many are the transgenders required to do?

Lots of Q's are circling around in my mind.
If a transgender person is strong enough, fast enough, mean enough, why shouldn't s/he play pro football? I suggest you let the NFL worry about this, since it will be their "problem", and you turn your attention to worrying about something that is actually within your purview.

So should a formally male sprinter be able to compete as a female sprinter, or a male shot-putter be able to compete as a female or a male MMA be able to compete against a female MMA, etc. etc.

cd :O)

A decent athlete that goes male to female at a young age could potentially be great in several female sports. For example a bad male college basketball player would likely be the best WNBA player. Does a trans male gotta have bottom surgery to compete in female sports?

I'm sure that some crazy sports fanatic is already in the process of bringing up their male son as a female. The question is - who will be the first great male-to-female athlete? Will the same people that cry for acceptance complain about it being unfair solely based on genetics?

That's up to the sports organization involved.

Title IX seems to me to require that trans folks in school be allowed to participate in the sports programs of the gender they identify with.

No, I suggest googling ex professional tennis player Renee Richards, the male to female transgender who successfully sued in order to compete. She has since stated that if she had the surgery in her early 20's no woman in the world would have had a chance against her.

The Chinese should load up on trans men for the upcoming Olympic Games. Forget doping - go for gold with "men".

Actually the OP has hit on a interesting issue. If gender is not a physical phenomena, but just a matter of personal preference, mental conditioning, but that fundamentally, there is nothing different about men and women, then why can't men compete in women's sports. How dare the WNBA, or the Womens PGA etc exclude men?. What then becomes the criteria for admitting say a physical man who "feels" like a woman?
