Unless you are a business owner that abuses its salaried workers I fail to see a negative here. Obama finally did something for people who work and pay taxes. In year 8 no less but bravo for him.

We used to have that in this country. It was called the Gilded Age for a reason.

The problem with this is one size doesn't fit all. Suppose I have a job that requires someone to be there but they don't have to do much. I'll offer you a 3 1/2 day shift each week. The first 8 hours of each day you have some normal work, last day it's 4 hours of work. The next 16 hours or 8 hours on the last day is your own for the most part but you have to be there for the occasional duty. You can watch TV, sleep, run an online business/job or whatever the rest of the time...

The total time is 84 hours but your duties only add up to perhaps 30 hours. I would think many people would be interested in this especially if they are making minimum wage or a little more. For 16 hours each day you would be doing things you might be doing anyway at home and the big bonus is you get a 3 1/2 days off a week.

I can cover this with two people. If I have to pay overtime I'm going to hire more workers instead and you can come in for 8 hours 5 days a week.

I know if I was making minimum wage at McDonalds and someone offered me $25K ayear to do this I'd jump at the offer.

Which isn't the same as dictating the terms of the contract

If the SBO doesn't make a profit, they will go out of business and the jobs they had will disappear.

Come on,making $23,000 is dirt poor wages.

Who can live on that?

Because now, those that did work the extra to get extra, will not be getting extra and I will bust them down to part time, because I hired someone else part time to fill the void.

So now you are working 5 hours a day, instead of 8. The upside, I gave someone else a part time job. Now the guy that was making it, is not making it and dropped down a classification in the payscale.

Then when the guy quits, I have hired the new guy at a cost to me, that his overtime will equal what I was at to begin with and we start over to stay within budget, because in a competitive world, margins are very tight to keep the doors open.

I think a lot of people here love to fantasize about being the big boss man with riches that they have to worry about the government infringing upon.

No it isn't. Courts are when there's a dispute. If you want to call THAT government, then so be it, but it's law that drives it.
