I am assuming that there are a lot of Trump supporters on this forum. I am also assuming that you know that he has said that he would be okay with Japan developing a nuclear arsenal and/or withdrawing US troops from Japan (assuming that they don't pay us enough for it).

How can you still support Trump after he has said this?

Fact 1: The very reason Japan accepts the current military alliance, where the US pays for the lion's share of Japan's defense costs, is because it's cheap for Japan! Believe me when I say that our military presence over there isn't very popular with a lot of the Japanese. They're letting us stay because we pay. Once we make them pay above a certain amount, the cost-benefit calculation for Japan would shift toward providing for their own defense.

Every nation has a militarist faction. Just because the far-right militarists and expansionists in Japan don't have that much political power right now doesn't mean that it's not a possibility in the future. If Japan gets nukes, its will have become a great military power overnight. Once Japan acquires nukes, there is nothing to stop it from developing a first-class Navy, a first-class Army, Air Force, etc. Its economy is already larger than all of the countries in the world except for the US and China.

Would anyone care to defend Trump's statements?

He doesn't mean it.

All he wants is for them to pay something for us to protect them.

So, of course, the stupid liberal reporters ask him what if they don't pay.

But they will pay.

They can afford it.

Much ado about nothing.

I'm not voting for Trump but I pretty much agree 100%. It's none of our business and we should pull our soldiers simply because we no longer have any business being there.

And those who argue "Trump supporters", "Hillary supporters" are hypocrites of the highest order.

Seems we hear that frequently from the Trumpies. WHERE do you folks get your Secret Donny Decoder Rings that translate all his BS to what he really means? Would it just be too politically correct to ask them to pay something if that's what he really means?

It's a good idea.

The Chinese are terrified of Japan and a nuclear Japan would be a huge thorn in the side of Chinese expansion/agression.

China isn't terrified of anyone. Their only concerns are internal.

Better than a nuclear armed Iran, that the current occupant, and prev. Sec. of State support, though with layers of obfuscation on top.

The alternative is a Democrat who will allow our enemies to have them.
