Who knew? As it turns out, the word "oriental" is derogatory. Our government, ever quick to be PC, has just scrubbed the term from the federal books and will now refer to those "orientals" as Asian Americans. Before you blame Obama for falling all over himself with political correctness, understand that representatives sent him the bill. Yes, the Republican congress that can't agree on much of anything unanimously passed this bill. This is serious stuff, I guess.

Until Trump is elected and repeals this right after Obamacare, I will stop using the term. How about you?

oriental is a rug, not a person. It's not even a proper label when referring to people.

Obama is a moron but this isn't something to get upset over.

A lot of people use it to refer to other people, in this part of the US at least. I doubt they saw it as derogatory.

Why are our elected in such a blitz to protect everything even when that thing doesn't need protecting? Is it the one or 2 people that find offense to it?
Just look at the silly trans bathroom nonsense. Trans people have been using the bathrooms of their choice for years without issue but now that the Gov. has taken up the cause for them it is a big deal.

How about the big stink over renaming the Washington Redskins because some people thought redskins was a bad word. When I hear of any sports team that has a Native American reference for a name I think of a strong noble warrior not something negative.

Illegal aliens became undocumented workers and next will be called unenrolled democrats.

What is wrong with oriental? The word orient reminds me of a far away exotic land where Marco Polo traveled to.

Who are these people that come up with these ideas that certain words and terms are wrong? Isn't there more important things they should be working on?

I tend to agree with calling them Asian.

And the term 'White" should be replaced with European.

They also called black people ******s.

Since I've been alive, it's always been considered impolite to refer to an Asian person as being oriental. It's hardly a word used anymore anyway, but even if it was to be used, it refer to traditional Asian looking things, not people. Rugs, lamps, things like that. They can be labeled oriental, but even so, rarely are.

You can call it political correctness all you want, but given that most do consider it impolite to refer to people as being oriental and few people do it anyway, I see no sensible reason for you to have a problem with this outside of Obama being the one doing it and you only have a few more months to complain about arbitrary crap.

Somebody arbitrarily decided that 30 or so years ago. But "Asian" is hardly an improvement. As a descriptor the word is completely useless.

I don't think oriental is in the same class. If people wanted to hurl racial epithets at people of Asian descent, there are no shortage of them to choose from. "Oriental" would be way down on that list.
