Nonsense! People like you are the first ones to say let's make things "merit-based" but turnaround and use your connections to get a friend a job.
All the time. Lol...
My regional manager is a big ol Republican and he talks all that merit crap.
And yet...he promoted me over a better qualified guy because I worked for him in the Army and he's more comfortable with me in the position.
To boot...HIS boss is someone who hired HIM for the same reason...familiarity. They worked together for three years back in D.C. and they're golfing buddies.
That's how the world works. And everyone...ESPECIALLY white people, know it!

It is a combination of both. I have seen people get a job due to connections and quickly lose it when they cannot do the job.
You have to have the ability to do the job. Yes, it pays to network. I did that at one time. Got up to a position that sucked.
Yes I think merit based is best but obviously nothing runs 100% on merit and that's ok. In CA public universities spots are guaranteed to top high school students or those with certain gpa's, which is great since they are state schools for the most part. There might be higher qualified students who aren't residence that loose out there, but that's fine. Private schools may have legacy admits, etc. which is ok too, it's not like half the admits get in that way or anything it's just a handful. Connections always have and always will mean something so let's accept that and move on. Special skills? Well that's understandable too if something like a football team is so frickin important (it's not to me but I digress..)

VOX is run by Ezra Klein. You are just like one of those Romney supporters who claims that simply stating that your candidate is losing in the polls is support for their opponent.
Connections are just as if not more important in my profession.
Agreed. It ain't "what you know", it's WHO you know, especially in a smaller town. Tho having the skill set for the job IS necessary to even start off with.
Loyalty should be to the company. Not an individual in a company.
Hmmmm....well...
