They have lots of nuclear weapons, an increasingly aggressive military, and Putin and Obama deeply disrespect each other. Remember the Cuban Missile Crisis? It was approximately 1200 miles from Cuba to DC. The Aegis Missile System in Romania is approximately 1200 miles from Romania to Moscow.

The Cuban missile crisis was about putting nuclear missiles in cuba. I don't see the equivalence there.

One mistake...
There's a subtle difference between SS-4 IRBMs and Aegis Ashore. Mostly that the former is designed to burn cities with 2.3 Mt thermonuclear of explosive power, and the latter is designed - well, shoot down other missiles, really. Useless for anything else.
Russia's stance seems to be "We're not saying we wanted to launch missiles at Europe, but it was nice to have the option" and I see no reason to honor that.

Ehm - GWB tried like hell to put a missile defense system in Poland, an idea that the Polish population didn't much like. To the point where he essentially offered the Polish military hundreds of millions worth of hardware to sweeten the deal. Of course, GWB wanted to use the consistently-failing GMD system (the pork must flow) and the deal was made outside NATO channels, neatly making both NATO allies and Russia unhappy in the process. (Condaleeza Rice just wasn't that great at any job she held, was she?)
This install - which has been planned for years - is using proven hardware, the system is deployed in a NATO framework and of course Russia is still unhappy. But after MH17, I see no reason to listen to them on the subject of SAMs in Central Europe.
All that being said - the Obama administration should have taken a harder line with Russia earlier than they did, and I do think that will be counted as one of this administration's mistakes in years to come. Russia is regressing into cold war mode, fast, and it's pretty obvious that free European countries have reason to be nervous. Of course, having the Republican candidate talking openly about how NATO is obsolete is very encouraging to Putin - talk about delivering a major propaganda coup.

well, I am not the fan of Obama, but this is stupid.
