I don't agree with this view. I imagine many people his age do. I tend to believe that it's not fair to hold the environment they grew up in against them. At least to a point. For example, Lincoln thought black people were barely human. He was not a fan. But, he didn't mistreat them (to my knowledge) and he did abolish slavery, so I'll give him a pass.
If that's the case, why do we take down confederate statues and rename schools? Isn't that essentially looking the 1800s through 2016 glasses? If people can be outraged about that stuff, why can't they be outraged about someone that preached racism in the 60s/70s?
On this portion of your quote, I just want to point out that the government was not really drafting ALL people for the Vietnam war.
I should have used "men." My mistake....
Quote:
They drafted primarily working class and lower people. This meant that more blacks, latinos, and poor whites were drafted versus those in middle class and above households.
John Fogerty who served the military got a lot of grief for singing about this....... some even saying Fogerty never served the US military. "Fortunate Son" was the common mans song who was drafted and sent into foreign land to fight for other men........samething Ali had said, just not in a song.
Quote:
Also, the early years of the war did see more blacks in particular being drafted versus whites, which many felt was discriminatory.
My guess the Native Americans were also drafted by large numbers, I wonder why they are not complaining?
Who else was in the "more" category?
Indian people have always respected their Vets...
So when they come home, they come home with honor and dignity.
Not like many of the non-Indians who came home to outright
hostility. Native American Vietnam Veterans
During the Vietnam War, close to 90% of the 86,000 Indians who enlisted volunteered, giving Native Americans the highest record of service per capita of any ethnic group. Over half served in combat.
What about the Vietnam soldiers who never came back.. they deserve more respect for protecting our countries freedoms. Ali had that same freedom but didn't want to fight for it.
Muhammad Ali gets a pass on his controversial views because he's Black. That's all there is to it. America is full of double standards and has been that way for years. It shouldn't be a surprise, but it's understandably annoying.
