what the government considers "assault weapons" are not always assault weapons. If it has two or more of a list of items, it is considered an assault weapon. IE a scope and a non wood stock, or a clip that holds more than 10 rounds. The definition is all based on looks, not function.
I guess I consider all guns "assault weapons"..LOL. . I guess what I'm asking is that if you are not a hunter, a cop or in the military.. why have a gun? and ones that fire rapidly..etc.

In 1996, 2 people were murdered by handguns in New Zealand, 15 in Japan, 106 in Canada, 213 in Germany, and 9,390 in the United States. [FBI Uniform Crime Report]
Nine out of ten young people who are murdered in industrialized countries are slain in the United States [United Nations Children’s Fund report, "The Progress of Nations" quoted in St. Paul Pioneer Press, 9/26/93].

Guns kept in the home for self-protection are 43 times more likely to kill a family member or friend than to kill in self-defense. [ Kellermann and Reay, N.E. Journal of Medicine]
Every two years, more Americans die of gunshot than there were American soldiers killed during the entire Vietnam War [National Center for Health Statistics, Department of Defense Almanac].

For grins. Take a look at two definitions with the ATF. Assault Rifle, vrs, Assault Weapon. They are completely different in definition.

WOW!!! AN EYE OPENER!
And most of these were committed by criminals that do not adhere to gun laws that are already on the books. Even if we add more, they still won't adhere to the new ones.
Don't you think a law abiding, trained citizen should have the right to defend themselves?
We don't need more laws, we just need to enforce the ones we already have. Adding to them will do nothing.
The state with the strictest gun laws is California. You know, Pelosi, Feinstein, Boxer. The biggest three Anti Gun people in office. But California had more murders, then there were deaths in Iraq and Afghanastan in the same amount of time. Parents don't want their kids going to Iraq, but think nothing of Spring Break in California. You have almost a 2 to 1 chance of being shot and killed in California, over Iraq or Afghanastan.
The United States leads the world's richest nations in gun deaths -- murders, suicides, and accidental deaths due to guns - according to a study published April 17, 1998 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the International Journal of Epidemiology.
The U.S. was first at 14.24 gun deaths per 100,000 people. Two other countries in the Americas came next. Brazil was second with 12.95, followed by Mexico with 12.69.
Japan had the lowest rate, at 0.05 gun deaths per 100,000 (1 per 2 million people). The police in Japan actively raid homes of those suspected of having weapons.
The 36 countries in the study were the richest in the World Bank's 1994 World Development Report, having the highest GNP per capita income.
The United States accounted for 45 percent of the 88,649 gun deaths reported in the study, the first comprehensive international scrutiny of gun-related deaths.
The gun-related deaths per 100,000 people in 1994 by country were as follows:
U.S.A. 14.24
Brazil 12.95
Mexico 12.69
Estonia 12.26
Argentina 8.93
Northern Ireland 6.63
Finland 6.46
Switzerland 5.31
France 5.15
Canada 4.31
Norway 3.82
Austria 3.70
Portugal 3.20
Israel 2.91
Belgium 2.90
Australia 2.65
Slovenia 2.60
Italy 2.44
New Zealand 2.38
Denmark 2.09
Sweden 1.92
Kuwait 1.84
Greece 1.29
Germany 1.24
Hungary 1.11
Ireland 0.97
Spain 0.78
Netherlands 0.70
Scotland 0.54
England and Wales 0.41
Taiwan 0.37
Singapore 0.21
Mauritius 0.19
Hong Kong 0.14
South Korea 0.12
Japan 0.05
BTW.. this does not mean that I support the government doing what they do in Japan before anyone tries to say that.. BUT.. I totally DO support tougher gun laws...etc.
