People are so focused on November 2016 I rarely hear or read about how Trump has changed the party forever. I think the establishment is naively thinking this cycle was an anomaly and after the failed experiment (i.e. When Trump loses) the base will come back down to earth and vote for someone like Kasich or Rubio in 2020 and everything will be back to normal. In actuality though if Hilary wins, after four years of her policies the base will be even angrier and likely nominate someone even more extreme and bombastic, and plenty of candidates like this will come out of the woods to run in the primary on this type of platform, trying to emulate the success of Trump. If the establishment, after a 2016 loss, tries to change the nomination rules by giving more power to unbound delegates, and if they use this in 2020 to nominate who they want, they will likely lose a significant percentage of support from the base (or maybe the base will just fall in line and vote for whoever is on the R ticket anyway, motivated by taking Hilary out of office?). If/when Trump loses in November, what direction will the party go in 2020?
