A faculty committee has proposed adding a three credit hours requirement in diversity to the general education curriculum at Wayne State University. It also recommended that WSU drop its university-wide requirement in mathematics, an idea that was carried out on June 13.
“We are proposing the creation of specific ‘Diversity’ courses, with students required to take one course in this designation,” said a document from the General Education Reform Committee, which is recalibrating what the university will expect from all students who earn a degree from the state university. It released the proposal in May.

Pretty much that. Sad to think that they have an engineering program and are embracing that level of stupidity.

Up until now, students had to take one of three different math classes before they could earn their degree. The university is leaving it up to the individual departments to decide whether math will be a required part of a degree's curriculum.

The general-education math requirement will be suspended until fall 2018, at that point, the university will likely adopt an entirely new general-education program.

How scary.

That darn mathematics competency class is such a must for your molecular biology degree.

Math is still part of the engineering program. Just like it is still part of the Mathematics degree program.

I would love to know what percentage of serious academic people actually believe that classes in "diversity" should be required for all college students. I'd hope that there are a large number who privately oppose this but go along to avoid harming their careers. But maybe I'm wrong...

Makes sense, when I went to college, i was required to take a math class that I had already taken in high school. I was on a College prep degree, so my senior year, i took college level math. Seemed pointless to have to take it again since i had already passed it, and scored high enough on my ACT to not need any remedial classes or have to take the entrance exam.

Good job on the school's part.

Good job on the school's part.

For people who are not in math or science majors, I think it's okay to wave or reduced the math classes, provided that these students scored very well on the SAT's math section. Not merely in the top 50%, but in the top 25% or at least in the top 33%. Looking at the freshmen profile at Wayne State University, I am reasonably sure that most of their students don't fit the criteria.
