The main reason people oppose assault rifles is because they are meant for nothing other than killing people, but so are pistols, in fact only rifles and shotguns should be legal if we were to follow this thought.

Should pistols be next in the war against guns?

Governments are afraid of the rifle.
People are afraid of handguns

That is the difference.

Well, there's a reason soldiers go into battle with long (machine) guns rather than handguns. They can do more damage faster than handguns.

Not many battles at 30 - 40 feet. Weapons of war are chosen by the situation most likely found.

Semi-automatics are not machine guns.

Wha??? Rate of fire is exactly the same for a handgun as it is for a semi-auto rifle. The difference is how far you can shoot. Also some differences with velocity and bullet rifling, but "faster"? You're full of crap.

Edit: Ah. I see you mean fully automatic. I assumed the OP was talking about the semi-auto rifle, since that's what discussion has been about for the last week.

They can reach out and touch the enemy, before the enemy is upon them in close combat, with hand guns & fixed bayonets.
Government can in no way corral a bunch of snipers. But they can a population only armed for close combat.

Main difference: Today the anti gun nuts want to ban "assault rifles", tomorrow they want to ban pistols.
