In my thinking, I am particularly talking about the U.S and how we are a supposed beacon of good and democracy yet we are always more than happy to shake hands with, hand lunch with, and act like BFFs with some of the most evil sadistic people - the kind of people Hitler would befriend - alive? I understand often times they have things that we want, such as oil but do they honestly ever feel bad about making deals with such sub-human scum?

Its not only the US that do this... its gone on forever with other countries too...

Yes, but the U.S loves to go on and on and on about how we are the #1 in freedom, democracy, human rights, etc. etc. yet we keep happily making deals with devils.

Why do you think you have the right to call other nations sub-human scum? Is it the mere fact that they do not share your values and want to live differently? Guess what, observed from the other side of the ocean, sometimes it is the US and its government who seems to be the worst scum. The notion that they are a beacon of good and democracy, as you claim, is a misguided illusion. More like a relentless juggernaut which crushes anything that does not conform.

It appears that she was not making that claim. She said they are supposed to be, which is not to say that they are. The phrase supposed to be in fact intimates that they are not what they are claiming to be (my guess is that she would agree with your statement, that it is a misguided illusion).

That's because it's ALL ALL ALL about the money......for a select few.
I agree this is more about politics than philosophy.
Purehuman is right, it's basically explained by following the money. Jingoistic paeans to American exceptionalism have always been BS to beat the war drums, "inspire" people to self-sacrifice for the supposed greater good, and a distraction from the perfidy of the elites. We have always had the same alliances with despots and criminals, as have other countries, when it has suited out purposes. We have betrayed the weak as much as other countries, when it has suited our purposes.

That is a myth.
If you want a handle on how and why all this came to be mythology, I would suggest watching, "Requiem for the American Dream" Its not fiction. Its a series of interviews with Noam Chomsky.
Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historian, logician, social critic, and political activist. Sometimes described as "the father of modern linguistics", Chomsky is also a major figure in analytic philosophy, and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science.
