Those that can't do either go into HR.

A lot of ideas are assumed to be fact when they're very debatable, especially in fields like history and economics.

So basically, it's natural for people to hire like-minded people, and if you do manage to sneak in, rocking the boat won't be good for your career.
This is a lot of it. Other issues include:

1) Conservatives are more drawn to the private sector for ideological reasons.

2) Academia is inherently a theoretical endeavor. In my experience, leftists tend to prefer the theoretical to the practical. Most of what is produced by academia results in little to no actual value, but for the left, all that matters is intent.

3) Academia is extremely insulated from the "normal" world. It seemed like most of my professors didn't have TVs or have much of an interest in the things normal people do. Many of them are people that do not fit into to normal society.

4) Academia has essentially become a giant laboratory for social change. This is largely achieved through propaganda. As conservatives are usually less interested in social change, it makes sense that there would be more leftists in academia.

It wasn't always this way. For hundreds of years up through the 1950s Western universities tended to be part of the conservative establishment. The 1960s were a perfect storm for leftism that changed everything in academia. The pendulum swung far to the left and hasn't retuned yet but I think it will eventually. There's just too much nonsense there now for smart people to swallow.

Are you talking about professors of anthropology or professors of computer science? They are extremely different.

I disagree. Liberals are very good at saying they like to associate with people of different backgrounds. But when it comes time to make a choice, they tend to live around people exactly like them. Look at the rich liberal areas in NYC and LA.
