"The officer had shot Delrawn Small three times after the 37-year-old man punched him twice in the face and mouth."
Small had been drinking - got upset when someone cut him off (not knowing this was an off duty cop!) Went up to the cop's car and was pushing him through the window - then punched him twice in the face. Cop or not - an armed civilian might have done the same so I don't hold this as a white cop shoots black man scenario.
Not so different than the lunkhead who threatened the guy across the street yesterday because my neighbor dared to make a full stop at a stop sign and the guy behind him was impatient. The guy went to come after him when my neighbor told him to get his butt back in his truck unless he wanted my him to give him a real reason for having the handicapped license plate. You never know who has a gun.

Nevertheless, the shooting was unnecessary. The cop could have simply drive away.
Yes - the cop should have driven away - but there's something about being hit in the head a couple of times where you might just decide you should fight back.
... the slain man’s brother said it didn’t matter if Small threw the first punch.
“At the end of the day, all that matters to me is that he got shot by a cop for no reason,” Victor Dempsey said.
