I'm sick of all this. I don't even like leaving my house anymore. But that's OK, the cops will just knock your door down with a tank.
Just don't violate any number of the bazillion laws on the books that now govern our daily lives and you won't have to suffer the ire of an armed tax collector.
And you're right about the tank thing...hopefully they won't mistake your house for a real perp and shoot you or your dog.

I have to think that this says more about your travel history and locations than anything else. That would be an impossible feat if a person drove with any frequency in some locations.

I said, "first ticket" (speeding) not first speeding ticket.

Don't know if it is still true but back in the early 1970s, when I lived in NY (Long Island), if you got any kind of a moving violation within 6 months of getting your license, you paid a fine and you lost your license (mine was a two month suspension) plus I had to go to a class with the drunk drivers who lost their license. The one who was "punished" was my ex-husband who had to drive me to work in the morning after getting home from working a night shift job, to that class and everyplace else for two months. Not the cop's fault. My fault. 20mph over the speed limit.

Here are a few tactics that Police here in Ontario use to make a traffic stop less dangerous for both parties.

They park so that the Police vehicle is partly blocking the oncoming traffic lane, which requires oncoming traffic to "move left " a bit, to give more space. They enter the plate number of the vehicle in their computer, before they get out of their car, to see what the registered owner's address and driver history is like. They approach the car they stopped on the "passenger's side ". That makes it harder for the driver to see them. It also makes it a bit harder to attack or shoot them, as the right side of the car can be used by the officer as a shield if needed. It also requires the driver to open the right side window and that requires them to unbuckle the seat belt.

If the driver isn't complying with those requirements , they have just failed part one of the attitude test. The officer will ask for ( note the word ASK ) for driver's license, ownership and proof of insurance. If the driver brings them out, and hands the to the officer, with out argument, they have gained a point on the attitude test. The officer will then say... I am going back to my car, to check you out on the computer, so give me your keys, to hold while I am back there. The smart driver will know that this is for the protection of both persons. The officer will complete their computer check and either write up a traffic offence notice, or not.

The officer returns to the passenger side of the stopped car, returns the keys, the license, insurance slip, and ownership, and explain the options that are printed on the reverse of the offence notice, re payment, or where and when to appear at court. If he or she is a smart officer they will NOT get into a argument about any part of the reason why a charge was written. They will say, you have the right to protest the charge......In court. And walk away.

Once back in the Police vehicle , they will document the stop, and enter the basic details in their memo book, for use if needed at trial.

Summary. The driver wasn't threatened, the officer wasn't exposed to the chance of being struck by a passing car, and the interaction was civil. The driver has the choice of being polite or not. The attitude test that I mentioned is a sliding scale, that goes up or down, based on the actions and words of the driver. Most Police officers issue a number of traffic offence tickets each shift, so they don't have a personal grudge against every driver that they stop. That CAN change, and it all depends on the attitude of the driver, and or passengers, in the car.

By the way, that whole series of actions by the Police officer, is directly lifted from the Ontario Police College training manual.

Oh this is cute. Stupid things like broken tail lights can get you rear ended when the car behind you cannot see what you are intending to do.
